If you have a desktop computer, then I guess you know the fact that it is not just a single entity, but a combination of several parts connected to each other. In short, an arrangement of several parts functioning together makes up a computer.
There are two parts that make up a computer, Hardware and Software. Hardware refers to the physical parts of the computer, such as mouse, monitor, keyboard, speakers, system unit and more, that we can touch and see; while software refers to the programs that instruct hardware what to perform.
Today we will let you know about the general hardware parts that are assembled in a desktop computer.
Note: In a laptop, all such parts are combined into a small and single package.
Let us discuss about every part of computer in details.
The function of a monitor is to demonstrate the information and data in a form that can be visually seen by a user, by the use of graphics and text.
In the monitor, the portion that is used for display is known as Screen. It somewhat resembles to a television screen and can display moving or still pictures. There are mainly two types of monitors: LED (Light-emitting diode) and LCD (Liquid-crystal display).
It is used for connecting your computer to the internet. Modem word comes from modulation and demodulation of the data and information; it helps in receiving and sending information over a high speed cable or a telephone line.
It can be described as the core of your computer system. Generally it can be seen as a rectangular shaped box (see the above figure). There are many electronic components inside this box that helps in processing information and data in your computer.
It holds the most important part of your desktop computer which is known as Central Processing Unit or CPU; it can be described as the brain of the computer that is responsible for controlling and managing everything in it.
Another important part is RAM or random access memory; it is used for temporarily storing the information or data that is being used by the CPU when the computer is switched on. However, as soon as the computer is switched off, everything gets erased from the RAM.
System Unit also has a hard disk drive that is used for storing all the information, such as files and programs, which is made available on your computer.
All the parts of the computer are connected to the system unit via cables. It has particular ports for every device that needs to be connected for appropriate functioning of the system.
It is a tiny piece of hardware that is used for pointing and selecting items on the screen of your computer, which is the chief way for interacting with your system.
It is available in numerous shapes and sizes. It has two buttons and a wheel in between them which is used for scrolling mainly. Now-a-days, this type of ball mouse is not used. Instead optical mouse is used.
An optical computer mouse uses a light-emitting diode and photodiodes to detect movement relative to a surface, unlike a mechanical mouse which has a ball which rotates orthogonal shafts which drive chopper wheels for distance measurement. Source – Wikipedia
It is used for playing sound. They either come inbuilt in the computer or can be externally connected via wires. They let you hear music and sound effects from your system.
It lets a user to convey information which is available in your computer onto a sheet of paper. However, it is not an important part of the computer as you do not need it for proper functioning of your system.
Its main function is to type text into your system; it is very similar to a typewriter and has keys for numbers, letters and special characters. It also has several special keys that include function keys, navigation keys and numeric keys.
It can also be used for performing lots of tasks that are mainly performed with the help of a mouse.
There are also other parts that can be connected to your computer in accordance with your needs. Nevertheless, the above mentioned hardware components are the most basic and general ones that are required by every computer system.
